Why are we called
The Merchants?
OUR NAME PLAYS ON THE BUILDINGS 19TH CENTURY VICTORIAN ROOTS. THE EARLIEST HISTORY OF THE BUILDING TELLS US THAT IT OPERATED AS A MERCHANTS, SPECIALISING IN FURNISHINGS, WHICH MAKES IT THE PERFECT SPACE FOR
‘Everything is For Sale’.
4 BERESFORD STREET
HAS PASSED THROUGH THE FASHION WORLD IN ITS MOST RECENT YEARS BEING THE ORIGINAL LOCATION OF JACKS CLOTHING AND EARLIER ELLE FASHIONS.
PRIOR TO THIS IT WAS A LONG TERM TOBACCONIST FROM 1914 TO 1979 CALLED LE ROSSIGNOR.
PRIOR TO BEING
LE ROSSIGNOR’S
HENRY LE ROSSIGNOR HAD PURCHASED IT FROM GEORGE PICOT IN 1914.
THE PROPERTY WAS OWNED BY THE PICOT FAMILY HAVING VARIOUS SIBLINGS LIVING IN THE FLAT ABOVE WHILST ALWAYS RUNNING A SHOP ON THE GROUND FLOOR.
THIS SHOP WAS A HARDWARE MERCHANTS RUN BY GEORGE AND HIS FATHER JOSUE FROM 1887 TO 1914.
BETWEEN 1857-1887
JOSUE’S OLDER BROTHER, ALSO NAMED GEORGE PICOT, OWNED 4 BERESFORD STREET AND RAN IT AS AN IRONMONGER, GENERAL FURNISHING AND HARDWARE MERCHANTS.
FROM THE EARLIEST JERSEY CENSUS STARTING IN 1841 THE EXACT HISTORY OF WHO TRADED IN 4 BERESFORD PRIOR TO GEORGE PICOT IS NOT EXACTLY KNOWN.
IT IS ALSO UNKNOWN WHICH YEAR THE BUILDING WAS BUILT IN, BUT WE CAN SEE FROM THE EARLIEST MAPS OF ST.HELIER IT WAS BUILT SOMETIME BETWEEN 1795-1834.
